When a family sits down with me to talk about flooring, the first thing they usually say is some version of “it has to survive our house.” Kids, dogs, backpacks, rolling chairs, a toddler with a juice cup. Laminate flooring comes up in those conversations constantly, and I want to give you the honest version: what it handles well, and where I would steer you toward something else. This is based on years of working with homeowners in Encino, Sherman Oaks, and across the Valley.
In this article: how laminate flooring stands up to kids and pets, how it deals with spills, which rooms suit it best, and what installation details make the difference.
What Makes Laminate Tough
Laminate flooring is built in layers: a dense core, a printed layer that creates the wood or stone look, and a clear wear layer on top. That top layer is what takes the abuse. Many products carry an AC rating, which indicates how well the surface resists abrasion, and a higher number generally means better performance in busy rooms. When you shop, ask about it, since two floors that look identical can wear very differently.
Kids, Pets, and Furniture
Laminate resists everyday scratching better than many people expect, which is why it is a popular pick for living rooms, family rooms, and kids’ bedrooms. Dog nails, dropped toys, and chair legs are all part of life, and a quality wear layer handles most of it. It will not be scratch-proof, and heavy furniture still deserves felt pads. Also keep in mind that laminate cannot be sanded and refinished the way solid hardwood can, so a deep gouge usually means replacing the plank.
Spills: Quick Wiping Is the Rule
Here is where I am careful. Standard laminate handles a quick spill without trouble, but it does not like standing water, especially at seams and edges where moisture can work its way into the core. The EPA notes that prompt cleanup and moisture control are central to avoiding damage and mold in the home, and that applies directly to laminate. Wipe spills promptly and you will be fine. Let water sit and you will not be.
Where Laminate Shines
Living rooms, dens, hallways, bedrooms, and home offices are all strong fits. These spaces see heavy foot traffic but little water, which is exactly what laminate is designed for.
Where I Would Choose Something Else
Bathrooms, laundry rooms, and areas near exterior doors that see a lot of rain-soaked shoes usually call for a waterproof product. In those spaces I often recommend waterproof vinyl instead, and it can sit right next to laminate elsewhere in the home. Mixing materials by room is a perfectly sensible approach.
Installation Details That Matter
Most laminate is installed as a floating floor, meaning the planks lock together and rest on an underlayment instead of being nailed or glued down. That makes installation efficient, but it does not make it careless. The subfloor has to be flat, because dips and humps telegraph through a floating floor and can stress the locking edges. Expansion gaps along the walls let the floor move with temperature and humidity. Our overview of laminate flooring installation explains how we approach it.
Keeping It Looking Good
Sweep or vacuum regularly with a hard-floor setting, and clean with a lightly damp mop and a cleaner made for laminate. Avoid soaking the floor and avoid abrasive pads. That is about all the care it needs.
Serving Encino, Sherman Oaks, and the Surrounding Valley
Many of the homes we work in across Encino and Sherman Oaks have family rooms that double as the center of the house, and that is where durable laminate earns its keep. You can see all the communities we serve on our service area page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is laminate flooring good for dogs?
It handles everyday paw traffic well, and a quality wear layer resists scratching. Keep nails trimmed and wipe up accidents quickly.
Can laminate flooring be refinished?
No. Unlike solid hardwood, laminate cannot be sanded and refinished. Damaged planks are typically replaced.
Is laminate flooring waterproof?
Standard laminate is water-resistant at the surface but not waterproof. For wet areas, we usually recommend waterproof vinyl.
How long does a laminate flooring installation take?
Many rooms can be completed in a day or two, depending on size, layout, and subfloor condition.
